French Quarter Oyster Landmark Celebrates 150 Years
Mar 11, 2026
The historic P&J Oyster Company is celebrating 150 years as one of the most influential oyster businesses in Louisiana. Founded in 1876, the company is recognized as the oldest continuously operating oyster dealer in the United States and has played a major role in supplying oysters to restaurants across the region and the country.
For generations, the family-run business has been central to New Orleans’ seafood culture, providing oysters featured in iconic local dishes and restaurants. The company has overcome many challenges over the years, including economic downturns, hurricanes, and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, while continuing to serve chefs and oyster lovers.
To commemorate its long history, the company recently installed a historical marker in the French Quarter on the median at the corner of Toulouse Street and North Rampart Street. The marker highlights the company’s lasting impact on Louisiana’s seafood industry and its role in shaping the region’s culinary traditions.
Today, P&J Oyster Company remains a cornerstone of the Gulf Coast seafood industry, continuing its legacy of harvesting and distributing Louisiana oysters while maintaining strong ties to the region’s hospitality community.
