New Louisiana Sales Tax Filing System Launches January 2026
Jan 12, 2026
Louisiana is rolling out a new online state and local sales and use tax filing system, now accessible through Parish E-File. Beginning January 1, 2026, businesses may file using a Combined State and Local Sales Tax Return, which will be used for January 2026 sales tax returns due in February 2026.
This new combined return allows each physical business location to report all state and local sales and purchase activity on one uniform return. When filed through Parish E-File, the system will submit state and local sales tax returns to the appropriate taxing authorities on your behalf.
Other Filing Options (With Important Caveats)
Businesses may continue to use existing filing methods, but should be aware of the following limitations:
LaTAP – State Returns Only
You may continue filing state sales tax returns through LaTAP. However, if you file local returns using the combined return in Parish E-File, all state sales information must still be entered in the combined return, even if the state return itself is filed separately.
Sales Tax Online
Sales Tax Online remains available; however, it cannot be used in seven parishes: Allen, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Orleans, St. James, Terrebonne, and Washington.
Paper Returns
Paper filing is still allowed, but electronic filing is required in Ascension, Lafourche, Rapides, and St. Helena parishes.
Important Notes About the Combined Return
- Replaces the current single-jurisdiction and multi-jurisdiction returns in Parish E-File
- All state and local accounts included must have the same filing frequency
- A reconciliation feature requires total state sales to match combined local sales
- If errors cannot be resolved in time, another filing method must be used
- Late filings are subject to penalty and interest
Setting Up Accounts in Parish E-File
To use the combined return, businesses must:
- Log into Parish E-File
- Add each physical location, including all associated state and local account numbers
- Parish E-File will assign a Master Location Number for internal tracking
Filing Frequency Alignment
All state and local accounts must have matching filing frequencies before filing a combined return. Frequency updates can be requested in Parish E-File under:
My Returns → Return Setup → Return Information Table
Approval is required from the applicable taxing authorities, and businesses must also contact local authorities directly to request changes.
Importing Files (EDI Users)
Businesses using EDI imports will need to update their import files. Existing files will not be compatible with the new system. Updated specifications and instructions are available on the Louisiana Uniform Local Sales Tax Board (LULSTB) website.
Sales Tax Payments
Sales tax payments will continue to be remitted separately to each individual taxing authority. At this time, Parish E-File does not offer a single, combined payment option.
LRA Recommendations for Members
The Louisiana Restaurant Association strongly encourages members to access the new system well in advance of their usual filing date. Initial setup may be time-consuming, and some users have experienced technical issues during early testing. Allowing extra time will help avoid last-minute filing challenges.
LRA also recommends that members consult with a tax attorney or qualified tax professional to ensure a smooth transition to the new filing system.
