Honoring the Missing: America’s White Tables and POW/MIA Recognition Day

Sep 8, 2025
Each year on the third Friday of September, Americans pause to honor the courage, sacrifice, and enduring hope surrounding our nation's Prisoners of War (POWs) and those still Missing in Action (MIA). In 2025, National POW/MIA Recognition Day falls on Friday, September 19, and the Louisiana Restaurant Association joins the Lt. Governor in encouraging restaurants and communities to recognize this solemn day through the tradition of America’s White Tables.
Also known as the "Missing Man Table," this powerful symbol honors those who cannot be with us. A small, round table set for one represents the frailty of one, isolated prisoner. The white tablecloth signifies the purity of their intentions. The single rose, inverted glass, slice of lemon, and pinch of salt all carry symbolic weight—from bloodshed and family sorrow to unyielding hope. An empty chair reminds us of those who are still missing.
We invite restaurants, hotels, and hospitality venues across Louisiana to set a White Table display in their lobbies or dining areas to educate and inspire remembrance. This act of quiet tribute ensures that those who have not returned are not forgotten.
Together, let us honor the bravery of those who served and stand in solidarity with the families who still wait.
