A recent Washington Post article outlined the importance of front line workers receiving access to the COVID-19 vaccine. The CDC recently provided recommendations to states on the priority of vaccinations based on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). CDC recommended that restaurant workers should receive the vaccine in Phase 1c (after 1a and 1b). We have engaged with the CDC and the Administration and advocated for our industry to receive the vaccine sooner, and be included in 1b (second round) along with other essential workers. However, the CDC recommendation is just guidance and states have the final decision on how to distribute the vaccines.
Our Association is working to ensure restaurant workers are vaccinated as soon as possible once the needs of healthcare workers, first responders and the at-risk population are met. Restaurant workers are important components of the food supply chain and are an integral part of each state’s critical infrastructure segment. Prioritization of these workers will be a key intervention to help them remain health on the job and to ensure continued operations as the battle against COVID-19 continues.
