March 24, 2015- ​The LRAEF is now accepting scholarship applications through April 10, 2015. The LRAEF Scholarship Fund was created in 2009 to support the continuing education of individuals pursuing a career in the culinary and/or hospitality industry. March 19, 2015- ​In keeping with tradition now entering its eighth year, the Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off will take place at the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience in New Orleans Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. Ten Louisiana chefs will compete to represent the state in Great American Seafood Cook-Off, which will take place during the Louisiana Foodservice & Hospitality EXPO on Saturday, August 8, 2015. Chefs interested in competing must be an executive chef for a restaurant in Louisiana that is an acclaimed free-standing restaurant. Restaurants associated with a luxury country club, resort or hotel are also eligible. Restaurant must be a member of the LRA. Entry forms will be accepted until Friday, April 10, 2015. March 17, 2015- ​The LRA is partnering with the NFIB and the Louisiana Retailers Association to bring you a lunch panel discussion, "2015 Governor's Race and Small Business: A First Look," Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at Ruffino's Downtown at De La Ronde Hall in Baton Rouge, noon-1:30 p.m. Corporate tables of 10, with name recognition are $500 and individual tickets are $35. The panel will include all the announced candidates for Governor: Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle, Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, State Rep. John Bel Edwards and U.S. Sen. David Vitter. March 16, 2015- ​The LRA sends its condolences to the family of Past LRA Chair Richard Brennan, Sr., who died March 14 at the age of 84. Brennan served as an advocate and ambassador for the state's restaurant industry. For his unwavering dedication to serving the restaurant industry and as the visionary responsible for the Jazz Brunch concept made famous at Commander's Palace, Brennan was inducted into the LRA Hall of Fame. He was a legend and his passing is a great loss. Read more.

March 13, 2015- ​Attention LRA Members- beginning next week, you will receive a notice from E&M Consulting about advertising in the Louisiana Restaurant Association Membership Directory. For the second year, the LRA is partnering with E&M to produce its director and they are managing all of the ad sales. You will receive a phone call from their sales team asking that you consider placing an ad in the directory. This is a great opportunity to further your company's exposure among the LRA membership. 

March 12, 2015- ​The Affordable Care Act needs a check-up, the NRA and the American Hotel & Lodging said recently in a joint op-ed. One top concern: The health care law defines full-time as 30 hours a week. Read more.

March 10, 2015- Register now for the NRA Public Affairs Conference, April 14-15 in Washington, D.C. This is the most important week for restaurant operators to have their voices heard in Washington.

March 6, 2015- ​Over the past few years, patent trolls--companies that purchase vague patents and threaten to sue restaurant and other businesses that don't pay licensing fees for their use of common technologies--have cost the economy more than $20 billion a year. The NRA recently joined United for Patent Reform to ask Congress to make changes to help end frivolous patent-infringement lawsuits. Read more.

March 5, 2015- ​Congratulations to our 2015 Louisiana Seafood ProStart Student Invitational winners! In the management competition, the winning school is West Feliciana High School in St. Francisville and in the culinary competition, the winning school is Lakeshore High School in Mandeville. Both schools will represent Louisiana in the National ProStart Invitational at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California April 18-20.

Important reminder: Any foodservice establishment having food and/or beverage sales in Orleans Parish and the New Orleans International Airport and has $200,000 or more in taxable food and/or beverage sales in the preceding year MUST COLLECT the New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority tax. For sales $200,000 to $499,999, the rate of tax is 0.5 percent and for sales $500,000 or more, the rate of tax is 0.75 percent. The Obama Administration recently announced that employers with 50-99 employees will receive Affordable Care Act transition relief. These employers have until 2016 to comply with the employer-mandate rule.

Effective January 1, 2014, the IRS will classify an automatic gratuity as a service charge, not a tip.
