Notice of LRA Class A Members Annual Meeting- The LRA Annual Membership Meeting will take place Sunday, August 3, 2014 at 11:15 a.m. in Room 296-298 above Hall I at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. LRA Class A (Restaurant) members are invited to attend.

July 11, 2014-
In its 11th year, the Great American Seafood Cook-Off is designed to promote domestic seafood, with chefs from states across the nation competing for the title of King or Queen of American Seafood, Saturday, August 2 at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. Nearly 20 states' chefs will be competing, including Chef Aaron Burgau of Patois Restaurant in New Orleans. Read more.

The LRAEF Five Star Futures Gala is SOLD OUT of tickets. The NRA is on the front lines fighting to make sure the FDA Food Code works for restaurants. A new Food Code is issued every four years and publishes supplements every two years. The LRAEF Board of Directors, through its Scholarship Fund, will award $61,000 in scholarships to 30 students to further their post-secondary culinary educations. Grace King High School ProStart Program alumnus Owen Hohl is making quite the name for himself, most recently with his now award-winning Cajun Burger. Hohl, who is the executive sous chef at Hot Tails Restaurant in New Roads, beat out 15 competitors June 14 at the Bull Outdoor Product's Bull Burger Challenge. Read more.

The LRAEF, in a new partnership with Camellia Brand, today announced a ProStart Program recipe contest for the 2014-2015 academic school year. The recipe contest will challenge high school students in each of the participating 50 ProStart programs statewide to create an original recipe featuring one or more Camellia Brand products including: Red Beans, Lady Cream Peas, Black Beans and Crowder Peas. Important reminder: Any foodservice establishment having food and/or beverage sales in Orleans Parish and the New Orleans International Airport and has $200,000 or more in taxable food and/or beverage sales in the preceding year MUST COLLECT the New Orleans Exhibition Hall Authority tax. For sales $200,000 to $499,999, the rate of tax is 0.5 percent and for sales $500,000 or more, the rate of tax is 0.75 percent. Monthly returns must be filed on the 20th day of the month following the month being reported. Click here for more info.

The Obama Administration recently announced that employers with 50-99 employees will receive Affordable Care Act transition relief. These employers have until 2016 to comply with the employer-mandate rule.

Effective January 1, 2014, the IRS will classify an automatic gratuity as a service charge, not a tip. The IRS regards service charges as regular wages, which must be reported for payroll tax withholding.
